Games by Pothos
What Pothos aptly titled extension lacks in original name, it more than makes up for in fun factor.
It has something for everyone! |
This is a browser extension for Microsoft Edge that is basically a list of games you can bring up and play at any time. These games are available to play offline, so even if you don't play games everyday you can keep the extension around so you have something to do if you're internet stops working. These games are all different from one another, so I'll be reviewing them all individually. Note: Unlike the Arcade Classics extension I reviewed a while back, all of these games were made by different people. If you don't have Edge but you still want to play these games, you can still find some of them online, just click the links below.
Here are the games in question!
- 2048 by Gabriele Cirulli: It's still a pretty fun game, but there isn't much I can say about this version that I can't say about the version from the last game extension I reviewed.
- Asteroids by Jsocol: This looks and plays just like the classic arcade game you probably played in the 70s, or on a 2000s era flash website. It's a fun recreation, but its kind of hard to make your ship stand still should you accelerate.
- Dwarfs: There and Back Again by Mvasilkov: This is a neat little retro-styled game with some alright music. It's a very simple game where you click to send dwarfs to gather gold from a treasure hoard. You can also spend that gold to draft more dwarfs, upgrade their speed and carry weight and even have them automatically send themselves on adventures. It has a surprising story that offers commentary on humanity's effects on nature. All in all it's a pretty fun game that you can have play itself while you go do something else.
- Elematter by Jack Rugile: This is a tower defense game with visuals mostly consisting of basic shapes. It is like your standard TD game but with a twist: There are 4 tower and enemy types each representing the elements of fire, water, air and earth. Certain towers deal increased damage to certain enemies kind of like Pokemon. It's a pretty fun game with a nice strategic element to it (pun intended😂), but I think it's outclassed by games like Bloons Tower Defense 5 and Plants Vs. Zombies.
- Exo by Jack Oatley and Ai Doge: This game looks pretty cool and it has some decent music. This game uses both the mouse and either the arrow or wasd keys to move, the mousewheel to zoom in or out and the spacebar to pause. Like Elematter it's a somewhat basic TD game with a unique twist: Here your building towers around the planets and moons in a solar system to defend them from invaders. Again it's not the best tower defense game I've ever played, but it still is an enjoyable experience.
- Freecell TreeCardGames: This is just Solitaire, that card game where you try to sort Poker cards in an ascending order. It works fine and looks pretty neat, but honestly I was never a Solitaire kind of guy.
- On/Off by Starzonmyarmz: This is a neat little retro-styled game with a decent musical score which utilizes the space bar and either the arrow or wasd keys for movement. Like the Shift games, you can invert the colors of the worlds, making some blocks solid and others intangible. It's a fun little game that'll really work your brain, but it gets really hard really fast.
- Pacman by Dale Harvey: It's Pacman. I think this game is better than the Arcade Classics version because it's much faster and I've never had any difficulties getting Pacman to go down any halls. One thing I've noticed is when a ghost gets eaten, it runs around the map for a bit before reforming rather than running to the middle. This is somewhat amusing, but it can lead to some cheap deaths when they reform right beside Pacman.
- Radius Raid by Jack Rugile: This retro-styled game might just be my favorite of the lineup. It plays somewhat like Asteroids, but with the addition of power ups (like triple shots and slowing down enemies) and different enemy types (including big enemies that split into 4 smaller ones when defeated). You use the wasd keys to move and either the mouse button or f to fire. It is immensely satisfying watching the enemies blow up and it's not at all hard to pick up and play. The only problem I have with this game is that the sound keeps cutting out.
- Snake by Patorjk: It's just good ole snake. In this version you can change the colors of the game as well as the difficulty; besides difficulty options ranging from easy to impossible, there is also a rush mode where the snake goes faster every time it collects a red box.
- Space Invaders by Dwmkerr: This plays much like the version from Arcade Classics, where you can fire as many shots as you want. This version is really fun, but I wish there was more detail in the graphics rather than just having everyone be a block here.
- Tower Building by RiseUp Labs: In this brightly colored, nice sounding game you try to build a tower as high as possible. You click to make a swinging crane drop pieces of a building onto the structure and try not to miss any. Three strikes and you're out. It's a nice game, and while it won't get you hooked for hours, it does make a nice diversion every now and then.
- UNDERRUN by Dominic Szablewski: This is another retro-style game and it has some nice, eerie music to go along with it. This uses the wasd keys for movement and the mouse for aiming and firing the gun. Your mission in this game is to run around dark mazes, fighting off giant spiders and other nasties as you reboot what I think are energy generators. It's a pretty good game that does get a little hard sometimes, but never impossible. My only gripe with this game is the game window is too tall for my computers monitor to show all of it, so I have to scroll down to see all the way south.
- VIER: Wizard Wars by Agar3s: This game looks and sounds like it came right from the ZX Spectrum. The arrow keys move your player and control his aim, A and D cycle through the 4 elements, S shoots, space bar jumps (and you can double jump) and enter pauses the game. Here you go around shooting a variety of enemies each representing the 4 standard media elements. Certain elements deal extra damage to enemies of certain elements and shots from you and your enemies will not harm either if they're the same element color. This is a fun and action packed game that does get somewhat hard later on, but it doesn't become impossible at any point. The game window is too big, but unlike UNDERRUN you can just zoom out to fix this issue.
