Edge Surf Game by Microsoft
Surf for your life! |
Who made it?: This game was made by a small team of Microsoft employees.
Story: Much like its prehistoric Chrome counterpart, this game is a retro-style endless runner that is available when the internet is down. There isn't much in the way of story here, just surf for as long as possible. It's certainly more in-depth than the Chrome Dino game, featuring multiple game modes, multiple control schemes and a host of playable characters.
Presentation: The graphics have a nice retro feel to them, almost looking like a game you'd find on Super Nintendo. There isn't any sound in the game.
How to play: Unlike most of the other games I've covered, this game has multiple different ways to play: The keyboard and/or mouse, your fingers if you're playing this on a mobile device or a gamepad. In addition to turning your surfer and stopping temporarily, you can also activate a short speed boost if you have some.
Gameplay: The game plays like a tropical version of SkiFree, where you zig zag through various obstacles run over ramps to get further ahead and avoid a giant monster (in this case a kraken who breaks your surfboard) as you try to get the highest score possible. Unlike in SkiFree, you get three lives to play with. If you lose all three lives or run into the kraken, its game over. It's a really fun game, surfing through various islands and piers, jump off of ramps, avoiding the kraken and just all around having a good time. Occasionally the obstacles can be all over the place and arranged in ways that make them really hard to avoid, but other than that and the lack of music I don't have any major problems with this game.
Final Verdict: Bottom line: This is a relatively simple yet quite fun game that should keep you busy while you wait for the internet to come back on.
