Operius by Mors

Did somebody say GX? This post isn't sponsored by Opera GX, but this is nonetheless a really cool game.

If this was the 1980s, this could've easily been a Vectrex game!

Who made it?: This game was made by a developer called Mors of Distant Illusions.

Story: In the year 20xx, the world has lost its internet. At the same time, a massive UFO was spotted hovering around Earth's atmosphere. As somebody on a spaceship, your mission is to go through said UFO and destroy it and restore the world's internet.

Presentation: This game sports a cool retro feel with SNES worthy graphics and a similar visual style to Atari's Tempest. The music in the game is really cool.

How to play: This game comes preinstalled on the Opera GX browser, just put opera://operius into the address bar or open said browser while your internet is down and you're there. For other browsers, just click the link up top. As for actually playing the game, it's unbelievably simple. All you use is the left and right arrows for movement, Space Bar to select options on the main menu and the enter key for pausing. For co-op mode, player 2 is controlled with the A and D keys. Firing is done for you. This game features gamepad support, but the controls are so simple that it's not really needed.

Gameplay: Similar to Atari's Tempest, you move back and forth on a polygonal tunnel firing at enemies and collecting power ups increase your weapons firing speed and/or amount of shots fired. You have to gather several power ups to move on to the next level or sector as the game calls it. Out of all the games that come built into web browsers that I've reviewed thus far, this one might just be my favorite. It can get kind of cheap with enemies attacking from behind, but other than that it plays really well and is very addictive.

Final Verdict: Whether you have the Opera GX browser or not (and before you ask, I don't), this is a game I highly recommend.
